This box painted by Leonid Zuikov shows a scene from the well-known Russian fairy-tale “Father Frost” (or “Morozko”). In the foreground he has painted Morozko who rewards the girl with the rich fur coat for her respectful demeanor while in the background we can see the old man who returns home having left his only daughter in the forest, and the girl's stepmother and stepsister who obliged the old man to commit such a shameful act.
The scene is painted in the traditional Mstera style. The lid is decorated with intricate floral and leafy patterns painted with tempera paints. The box's sides are decorated with a nice gold leafy pattern. The box is originally designed; it has three compartments within its interior.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Mstera and the title.
