Description: The piece of Palekh lacquered artistry of such design and painted on a religious theme is called “triptych”. A triptych is a work of art which is divided into three sections, or three panels which are hinged together and folded. The middle panel is typically the largest and it is flanked by two smaller related works.
On the middle panel we can see the icon of Vladimirskaya Blessed Virgin with the Child. The right panel shows the icon of John the Baptist while on the left panel the icon of Blessed Virgin is painted. The right panel on its external side features the icon of Archangel Gabriel whereas the left panel on its external side depicts the icon of Archangel Mikhail. At the top of the piece we can see the icon of Jesus Christ.
Constructed from paper-mache, this piece is richly decorated with gold ornaments accented in some places with aluminum paint. Its exterior is covered with black lacquer. Two gold metal knobs are attached to left and right panels for ease of opening. At the top of the piece the golden metal, Orthodox cross is attached. The work signed with title written in gold (“The Vladimirskaya Blessed Virgin”).
