This appealing, round box was painted by talented Mstera artist A. Yudin. Almost all surface of the box's lid is covered with the complicated pattern of stylized plants. In the middle of this pattern the bird “Jay” is depicted. The bird is painted skillfully; its body is covered with very thin, multicolored feathers. Fantastically beautiful yellow-pinkish flowers surround the bird, whereas the background is bright emerald. The edges of this composition are encircled with amazingly thin and intricate gold filigree. At a distance the painting resembles the multi-colored pattern of a Persian rug. Graceful swirls, sinuous scrollwork, delicate flowers and incredibly tiny dots and lines combine to create a symphony of forms. The precision and regularity in the artist's work here is truly breathtaking. The entire work is enhanced with lovely gold paint. It is optimistic in mood, decorative in style and very colorful. The sides of the box are adorned with wonderful patterns painted in gold and oils. These patterns include gold intricate scrollwork and incomparably beautiful, multicolored flowers with leaves, buds and different scrolls.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box isn't hinged and rests on a flat bottom. Upon completing the work on this piece the artist writes Mstera, the title “The Jay”, and signs his name on the bottom of the box.
