Description: This grandiose work that depicts the familiar biblical subject has been painted by Alexander Gaun from the village of Mstera. The painting style of this painter is always easily recognizable; it is notable for high quality of execution, original coloring and unique interpretation of well-known subjects. Here Alexander has painted the episodes from chapter 7 of Moses's first book called "Genesis". This chapter describes the Flood, and the miraculous rescue of Noah and his family. When the God decided to punish people for their sins, Moses was rescued because he was a righteous and immaculate man. The God said: "I'll annihilate people for their sins, but you, Noah, will be alive. Build the big Ark to find place for all your family, and also for male and female birds and animals. When I wash the planet with the Flood, you will be saved. So, in the middle of the composition we can see the Noah's Ark, and a little above angels pour water to flood sinful mankind. The rest part of the composition is covered with the images of sinners, who try to survive finding shelters on the highest picks of mountains, but everything is in vain, they are all are destined to die. In the left upper corner the artist quotes the twelfth verse of this chapter: "It was pouring for forty days and nights.", while in the right upper corner there is the quotation of the twenty first verse of the same chapter: "And all creatures in the flesh died including mankind, birds, animals and insects."
The coloring of the composition is based on harmonious combinations of three main colors: brown, red and yellow. Gold metal leaf is used to detail the halos of angels, the buckets with the help of which they pour water on the Earth, and also the Noah's Ark. Gold paint is used write the verses located in the right and left upper corners, to paint the angels' spears and swords, and also to detail their wings.
The composition is framed with two parallel gold lines, while the box's sides are decorated with beautiful gold and aluminum ornamentation. The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge located from the left of the composition and rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title, the village at the bottom of the composition.
