Description:

Lev Alexandrovich Fomichov of Mstera is the artist who painted this piece depicting the Pushkin's fairy tale "Ruslan and Lyudmila". The upper part of the composition shows the thrilling moment of the story when Ruslan finds the giant's head and the bloody battle starts. The giant's head blows at Ruslan, creating a powerful gust of wind while Ruslan tries to thrust the head with his sharp spear. The bottom part of the composition features Chernomor dressed like the rich sultan, sitting on the sedan-chair carried by several Arabic warriors. Lyudmila is depicted sitting inside the beautiful Eastern tent. She cries, and averts her face from the cursed, wicked magician.
This scene is dominated by green, yellow and orange tones. Gold paint is used to detail such elements as Ruslan's costume, the helmet of the Giant Head, the Eastern tent, the sedan-chair, the costumes of Luydmila and Arabic warriors. The entire drawing is very well-drawn. The line movement, compositional structure, and brushwork combine to make this composition an aesthetic wonder.
Fomichov has then demonstrated his master hand and painted a unique and expert patterns around the composition. These patterns are painted with gold paints and accented with blue and red tempera paints. The sides of the box are decorated with bigger in size beautiful floral patterns painted in gold and accented with blue tempera paints..
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The artist wrote Mstera, the title, and his name at the bottom of the painting.
