Description:

This enchanting original composition was composed by Mstera master Anatoliy Shirokov. It shows several scenes from the romantic A.S. Pushkin's novel "Yegeny Onegin". In the center of the composition we can see Alexander Pushkin, who is one of the most lovable writers in Russia, writing this trilling novel that tells about unhappy love of the provincial romantic girl, Tatyana, for the society lion, the seducer of the most beautiful women, Yegeny Onegin. Tired from the society Onegin leaves for the village where he finds the new friends, two daughters of the local landowner Larin, Tatyana and Olga, and also Olga's suitor, Vladimir Lensky. Tatyana falls in love with Onegin, but he doesn't return her feelings. Tatyana suffers greatly. Once at a party arranged in honor of Tatiana's name day Onegin dances and flirts with Tatyana's sister, Olga. Her suitor, Vladimir Lensky is injured, and in a fit of jealousy he challenges Onegin to a duel. During this duel Onegin accidentally kills Vladimir Lensky, and being deeply depressed he leaves the village, and even Russia, in hope that foreign countries may cure him from his depression. Several years later he comes back to St. Petersburg, and finds out that Tatyana who made him a declaration of her love in the village, now is the woman of fashion and the wife of a rich general. Onegin fells in love with Tatyana, and suffers from this love. Tatyana rejects his love saying that now he loves not her but her high social status.
In the center of the composition, to the left from Pushkin's figure, Onegin, Lensky, Olga and Tatyana stroll in the park not far from the Larin's estate. In the left part of the composition Tatyana writes Onegin her love-letter where she tells about her passionate feelings to him. To the right from this scene we can see the bear, the owls and the dark horrible forest from Tatyana's nightmare. In the right part of the composition Onegin makes Tatyana a declaration of his love. To the left from this scene Onegin drives to the ball sitting in the carriage.
Everything here is smoothly applied. The colors glide upon the surface of the box. A variety of grays, greens, light browns and soothing blues dictate the romantic feel of the composition. Gold paint is used to create the natural light source coming from the windows, the candles, the street lamps, the chandeliers, the moon, the skies and the stars. Shirokov paints with excellent detail here, combining a great deal into a small space without losing any clarity.
The edges of the lid are decorated with elegant pattern composed of gold beads of different size. The box's sides are decorated with more complex filigree patters painted in gold and aluminum. In the middle of each side the artist paints the additional small composition. One of them shows the bench in the park, the second one features verandah in the park, the third one shows the bridge in the park, and the fourth one shows Tatyana riding the steed.
The box is constructed from paper-mache made in the village of Mstera. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. A hinge has been fastened along the top of the composition and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed and titled by the author.
