Daniil Molodkin is one of the most popular Mstera artists around nowadays. His grassmen theme is a favorite with all types of collectors. The success of this series by the artist can be attributed to his want to make something fresh and not something that has already been made before. To creatively come up with new themes, subjects, and ways to fit characters into a fictional world is difficult and requires a great deal of time. While many artists are reproducing older works, others like Daniil are paving the way for other artists, and creating works that will be reproduced in the future.
This work that is entitled "Modest Gnome", continues the artist's series of works showing fantastic creatures, living in a downsized grass world. These creatures, gnomes and dwarfs, live in towns and villagers, and have different professions. The images of gnomes-scientists, gnomes-hunters, gnomes-fishermen, gnomes-travelers, gnomes-musicians, gnomes-mechanics, etc. have been contrived by the creative artist. Here we can see the funny gnome who is always confused because he is very shy. The gnome's emotions are rendered through his facial expression and gestures.
The artist uses here a wide array of blues, greens, and earthtones to convey the natural setting in the scene. He also uses purples, reds, and tones that help create the stylized atmosphere that make Daniil's compositions uniquely his own. Gold as always, in cooperation with aluminum, is used to enhance the details in the box and to fully bring the colors to life. In the sea of plants there is a great amount of movement that is very fluid and shows that the artist's hand handles a brush smoothly and accurately. The composition is filled with different details; besides the Modest Gnome we have here various plants, insects, a fish, a bird, and another gnome catching insects with a butterfly net.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache made in Mstera. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. A combination gold and aluminum ornamentation pattern frames the scene and wraps around the sides of the box. Both designs are similar, highly complex, and are a perfect aesthetic fit for the box. The box has a hinge to the top and rests on a flat bottom. The artist wrote Mstera, the title, and his name under the composition.
