Description: Alexander Dogadin of Mstera painted this work. It depicts events from the fairy tale of the most famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin "Tale of the Sleeping Princess and the Seven Bogatyrs." This tale tells about the beautiful girl who suffered from her beauty. Her wicked and envious stepmother tried to kill her several times intending to surpass her in beauty. The end of this story is happy. The girl's suitor, Prince Yelisey, saved the girl. He kissed her, and the girl awakened up from the eternal sleep.
In the center of the composition the Sleeping Princess lays the table waiting for the return of seven bogatyrs who've sheltered her and became her sworn brothers (they are depicted from the right of this scene). In the right upper corner Prince Yelisey asks the Sun and the Wind (they are painted in the left upper part) where he can find the Sleeping Princess. In the left bottom corner the servant of the wicked Queen tries to kill the Sleeping Princess with the help of a poisoned apple.
The artist fills the palette with bright colors, which work to complement each other with great efficiency. The oranges and the blues are the first to come into full view in this scene. Throughout the composition there is a great amount of movement in the clouds, the landscape, and in each of the characters. Gold paint is used in subtle amounts to highlight the scene and add flair for the eye to grasp.
The scene is framed with intricate gold ornamentation supplemented with two small additional scenes. One of them painted from the top of the main scene features a group of flying birds, while another one painted from the bottom of the main scene portrays three riders. Two of them pursuit the third one who defends himself by shooting. The sides of the box are also decorated with elegant gold and aluminum ornamentation.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed by the artist. The title of this work is the following line from the Pushkin's "Tale of the Sleeping Princess and the Seven Bogatyrs": "The young Princess lives in the forest with seven bogatyrs
