Description: The style and quality of Mstera master Lev Fomichyov is immediately recognizable. Each piece seems an epic work, and the results of his expert hand is felt at first sight. One the most decorated and renowned Mstera miniaturist still painting, Lev Fomichyov has already left a brilliant legacy that can be enjoyed not only in books and museums, but in collections around the world.
The work is called "Deerstalking", and features three riders hunting the deer. Hunting scenes is a traditional theme in the Russian lacquer art like the themes of troikas, battles, or tea drinking.
The palette is a very interesting blend of blue, olive, brown, green and red tones; there is an interesting fact that the paints the artist has used here are all homemade by Fomichov himself from natural materials like stones or plants. Gold paint is used to outline and highlight areas of emphasis in the scene.
The composition is thinly outlined in gold. Fomichov has then demonstrated his master hand and painted a unique and expert gold floral pattern around the composition. The same ornamentation only accented with blue and red tempera paints wrap around the box's sides.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The artist wrote Mstera, 2005, the title, and his name at the bottom of the composition in gold paints.
