Description:

This work is painted by one of the talented Molodkin brothers, Nikolay Molodkin. He is is the youngest in the Molodkin's family. The father of brothers, Vladimir Molodkin, has raised his boys to be great artists.
The work is called "Vikings", and features the everyday life of Northern people who inhabited Scandinavia in old times. In the middle of the composition there is a figure of a musician playing his gusli (a musical instrument). Playing the music, he sings songs about the beautiful and rich Northern Land; and about strong and brave people who inhabit this land. Around the musician the artist paints these people: hunters, fishermen and excellent warriors.
The blue waters of the river and green-brown tones of the northern landscape interact and contrast each other nicely. Looking closely at this composition allows a person to fully appreciate how much work went into each aspect of the scene. The brushwork is so intricate, but so multitudinous that it is hard to imagine a human hand drawing every single line so precisely.
The artist has also done a great job with the facial expressions of the men. They are everything. Excited, thoughtful, curious, merry, happy, and proud of their North Land.
The scene is framed with a gold line. Intricate gold foliage ornamentation decorate the edges of the lid, and wrap around the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the work while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition. The box rests upon a flat bottom. The work is signed, titled and dated (2005) by the artist in gold paints on the lid's interior.
