Description: Vladimir Molodkin of Mstera is the artist who painted this scene. He is not only a great master artist, he is also the father and mentor of his two sons, Daniil and Denis, who are also Mstera artists. The legacy the Molodkin family is crafting will remain on Mstera soil, and in the minds and hearts of the lacquer art world for many generations. His creative approach with his palette and the simplicity in which his paintings come out of his brushes shows his greatness. His style is not forced, it just flows. He brings his personality out in every painting he creates, which is more important than having the best technique or the greatest ideas. But by having impeccable technical skills and a mind full of fresh ideas the paintings he makes are some of the brightest and intimate in the lacquer art world.
The work is called "Evening Ringing of Bells", and features happy peasants enjoying the summer season. The day is drawing to a close, and the reddish pink sunset floods the ground with its beautiful pinkish-gold rays. The monk painted on the left rings a bell; and this sound touches the souls of peasants. This peaceful and happy life is protected by the angel hovering in the sky.
The palette is filled with pastels that can show the warmth of summer. Gold is used throughout the scene for added flair and to outline key areas in the composition. The gold is masterfully used in the correct proportions, and not overdone in the least bit. Molodkin has combined his own experiences, his artistic ability and originality to shape this amazing composition.
Two parallel strings of intricate gold and aluminum ornamentation frame the scene. The sides of the box are decorated with beautiful gold foliage patterns accented with aluminum paints.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while a brilliant red lacquer completes the interior of the box. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition for ease of opening. The box rests on four feet. The work is signed, dated (2005) and titled by the artist on the lid's interior.
