Description: This highly attractive piece of genuine Russian artistry was created by established Mstera master Anatoliy Shirokov. His compositions are highly dramatic extensions of his intelligence and imagination. The artist lets his palette do most of the talking for his presentations. These are the colors that dance to the music that is the story line and the characters within.
The painting is based on the popular story of, "The Sleeping Princess." This story was originally put to pen by French writer Charles Perrault when he published his collection of fairy tales "Stories of Olden Times" in 1697. The French title of the tale was "La belle au bois dormant," which means "The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood." The story has since been adopted into various versions in the many countries of the world; in Russia it is known as Sleeping Princess written by A.S. Pushkin. This box presents the original version of this tale.
In the center we can see the beautiful Sleeping Princess. She has been sleeping for three hundred years, and her dream will be eternal. She has been enchanted by a neglected fairy to sleep for three hundred years. The wish of wicked fairy is very cruel. Not only the Princess but also all people of the kingdom have been put to sleep. To the left and to the right of the central scene there are the figures of those who have been enchanted along with the Princess. On the left there are the stark figures of sleeping cooks and servants holding the trays with delicious food and tasty drinks; and also the figure of a sleeping jester. On the right there is another group of sleeping people: the King, the Queen, the astrologer, the peasant woman, and the keeper of royal treasures. The wicked wish has been fulfilled by means of the spindle that is painted to the left of the Princess. Gold and aluminum are use to detail various elements of the composition.
The box is intricately decorated. The composition is framed with a band of light brown tempera paints. This band is decorated with green geometrical patterns in each corner of the box. The geometrical patterns surround the small miniatures set into circles and featuring the sun, the moon, the red lion and the blue lion. Several phrases from the tale are written on this band against the gold background. The phrase written to the left of the composition can be translated as "what a beautiful princes sleeps in the palace
