Description: The author of this electric composition, Yuriy Vavanov, attended the Mstera Vocational Art School from 1951-1955, where he studied under E. Zonina. He began working at the Proletarian Art Factory in the same year as his graduation, and became a member of the USSR Union of Artist in 1965. He is a living legend in the world of lacquer art, and the awe inspiring mastery displayed here explains why. Works by Vavanov have been featured in many books on lacquer art.
Anyone looking to buy a great original lacquer piece should seize the opportunity to own this breathtaking work of art. It is abundant in spirit, color and imagery, and at every viewing something new is revealed. The timeless beauty of Vavanov's work will bring joy for generations to come.
The scene depicted here is based on the Russian song "Don't Scold Me, Mother" composed by A. Razorenova and A. Dyubyuk. In this son the young girl asks her mother not to scold her for loving a handsome lad.
The left part of the composition shows the girl imploring her mother not to scold her for meeting with the lad. The right side depicts the lad waiting for the girl. In the background the girls sing and dance in a ring; this scene correspond perfectly to the theme of the work based on the song.
To create this box, Vavanov chose orange, red and brown shades of egg-tempera paint as the base colors for his composition. The edges of the lid, and the box's sides are decorated with beautiful gold foliage patterns.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box is hinged from the top of the scene, and rests on four legs. The work is signed and titled by the artist.
