Description:

This box features "The Tale of Princess Frog". It has been created through the ingenious creativity of one Valentin Tikhomirov of Mstera. Audiences feel as if they are within the story itself when they are in the presence of the artist's work. Is it the color combinations? Could it be the spirited assembly of well-executed ornamentation. The truth of the matter is, it is a mixture of many elements. Each area compliments the next, creating the ideal depiction of fairy-tale. A depiction that can be enjoyed for years to come.
In the left upper corner of the composition we can see the beginning of the tale: the brothers launch their arrows at different direction to find their wives. Their arrows fall near the houses of rich and beautiful girls. Just beneath this scene we can see the youngest of brothers, Ivan Tsarevich, holding the Princess Frog in his hands. He hasn't been so lucky like his brothers; his arrow has fallen in the swamp near the frog, and now he is destined to marry it. Later it will turn out that this frog is the enchanted Vasilisa the Wise. In the center of the composition the artist depicts the end of the fairy-tale: having released his wife, Vasilisa the Wise, from Koshchei's captivity, Ivan returns to his native kingdom.
The blue background sky within the composition really brings out the other colors and it also enhances the texture of the trees. The characters are simple but very well executed.
The scene is framed with a gold line. The edges of the lid are decorated with very beautiful patterns painted in blue and olive tempera paints and detailed with gold paints. The similar ornamentation can be found on the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the scene while red lacquer completes the interior of the piece. The box is hinged from the top of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed and titled by the artist.
