This work is the design of Mstera artist Denis Molodkin. Denis comes from a family of miniaturists--his father Vladimir, his mother, and brothers, Daniil and Nikolay, all paint. Skill runs in the family, as this unique composition shows. Denis has combined texture and color to create this winter scene. From the first sight it's evident that the landscape depicted here isn't Russian, and the people that we can see here aren't the Russians. It seems that Molodkin created an illustration for some European fairy-tale written by Hans Christian Andersen or the brothers Grimm.
The scene is outlined with a gold line that runs parallel to the intricate gold foliage pattern. The edges of the lid are adorned with gold beads. The golden foliage pattern can be also found wrapping the box's sides.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged to the top of the composition, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed, dated (2004), and titled ("Winter") at the bottom of the scene in gold paints.
