Description:

This work is painted by one of the talented Molodkin brothers, Nikolay Molodkin. He is the youngest in the Molodkin's family. The father of brothers, V. Molodkin, has raised his boys to be great artists.
It features one of the most important battles in the history of Russia, known as "the Battle on the Ice". It took place in 1242 on the ice of Chudskoe Lake (or "Lake Peipsi", a large lake, on the border between Estonia and Russia in Eastern Europe). Russian forces led by Alexander Nevsky could rebuff an invasion attempt by the Teutonic Knights (or "Teutonic Order" is a German Roman Catholic religious order formed at the end of the 12th century in Acre in Palestine. During the Middle Ages they were a crusading military order and wore white cloaks with a black cross). Russian foot soldiers defeated an army of knights, mounted on horseback and clad in thick armor. The steel-clad Teutons drove a wedge through the lines of the lightly-armored Russian troops. At the very height of the fierce battle the ice was broken under the Teutons' weight and the unwieldy knights started going under one after another.
By nightfall the fearsome Teutonic army had ceased to exist. It was glorious victory that had a great cultural and strategic value, at the time and ever since.
The left part of the composition shows the Russian army under the command of Alexander Nevsky, while its right part depicts the army of the Teutonic Order. In the upper part the artist painted Russian saint martyrs, Boris and Gleb.
The palette consists of yellow and blue tones. The manner of painting bears resemblance to the unique style of Nikolay's father, Vladimir Molodkin. Some areas of the composition are covered with a thick layer of gold paint that shines like a gold metal leaf.
The composition is framed with a thick gold ribbon. The box's sides are decorated with intricate gold leafy pattern. In the middle of the front side there is a winter scene inside which the artist wrote his name, the title ("Battle on the Ice"), the village of Mstera, and the year of 2006. The same information can be found under the composition.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes its interior. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition for ease of opening. The box rests on four feet.
