Description: Valentin Tikhomirov of Mstera is the artist who painted this work based on the Pushkin's "Tale of Tsar Saltan". It is a five-sided box that features five different occurrences on each side. Tikhomirov also leaves his trademark decorations on the box, in between the scenes.
The lid's composition shows three sisters who sit inside the hut spinning yarn. Each of them dreams imagining what she would do if she were the tsar's wife. The tsar stands outside overhearing their conversation.
There are also four scenes painted on the sides of the box. On the left side we can see seafarers telling Tsar Saltan about the rich island, the property of Prince Gvidon, where they saw so many wonders. The rear side displays Prince Gvidon showing his mother the fantastic swan that helps him to realize all his wishes. The front side features Tsar Saltan who came to Gvidon's island to find out if the stories told him by seafarers are true. On the right side we can see one of the island's wonders - the squirrel that all day long shells golden nuts, separating gold nutshells from emerald kernel of nuts.
The ornamentation around the box is nothing short of spectacular. The artist fills solid areas of the decoration with mustard and blue tempera paints, while outlining them with gold. The vine and floral like configuration of the designs twists and moves across the box gracefully. He also paints gold ornamentation without using temperas, which appears both on the lid and on the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while a radiant red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the scene on the lid and rests on four carved feet. The work is signed and titled by the artist.
