Description: Antonina Medvedeva from the village of Mstera is the talented and very creative artist who created this large box. It depicts some scenes from Lewis Carroll's (1832-1898) classic tales "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass".
The box has four scenes around the body, and one scene on painted on the lid.
The scene painted on the box's lid shows several episodes from "Alice in Wonderland" including the White Rabbit who is in a great hurry as he may be late, and keep the Duchess waiting for him; Alice playing with her cat Dinah; the lady reading the tale "Alice in Wonderland"; and the smiling Cheshire Cat sitting on the tree.
The scene painted on the front side of the box's body depicts some scenes from 'Through the Looking Glass". In the center Medvedeva depicts the interior of Alice's house. Here we can see Alice, her cat Dinah with kittens, Alice's grandmother, and the looking glass hanging on the wall over the fire place. Through this looking glass Alice penetrated into the magic Chess Land. The left bottom corner depicts the White King writing something in his enormous memorandum-book (he decides to make a memorandum after Alice blows off ash from him). In the left upper corner we can see Tweedledum and Tweedledee. In the right upper corner Medvedeva depicts Alice talking to the White Queen, while in the right bottom corner she paints the White Knight.
On the right side of the box's body Medvedeva again depicts the scenes from "Through the Looking Glass". Here we can see Humpty Dumpty who looks like an ordinary egg; Alice who has become the White Queen; and the inhabitants of the magic Chess Land - chessmen: the Red King, the Red Queen and the Red Pawn.
The left side of the box's body shows the episodes from "Alice in Wonderland" including Alice trying to catch up with the White Rabbit, and the tea party at the Hat's house.
On the rear side of the box's body Medvedeva depicts the scenes from "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass". Here we can see Alice speaking to the Hare and Tweedledum and Tweedledee; the Cheshire Cat; the Queen and the King playing croquet; the Queen's soldiers shaped like the playing cards; and the Caterpillar sitting on the big mushroom, smoking the hookah and giving his advices to Alice.
The box's exterior is decorated with beautiful gold designs. On the lid and on the bottom part of the box's body these designs are accompanied by the images of playing cards and chess painted in tempera paints.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the piece. The lid is hinged at top, and the box rests on four legs. Signed with the artist's name, Mstera, and the title.
