Description: This magnificent work has been painted by Alexander Gaun from the village of Mstera. He is interested in depicting biblical subjects, and has already created a series of works based on this theme such as "Flood", "Exodus", "Gogotha", "Judas Treachery", etc. This is another box from this series. It shows an episode from chapter 11 of Moses's first book called "Genesis", and tells about the construction of the Babylon Tower, and a subsequent punishment of people for their vanity.
To paint this work Gaun has used his usual palette based on combination of brown and orange tones. Gold paint is used to paint the armor and the halos of the angels.
In the upper left and right corners of the composition you can find the following quotes from chapter 11:
"They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
"But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."
The composition is framed with two parallel gold lines, while the box's sides are adorned with gold floral patterns.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the left of the composition, and the box rests on four rounded legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title ("The Babylon Tower"), and the village of Mstera at the bottom of the composition.
