Description:

This elegant piece of genuine Russian artistry was composed by one of the top Mstera artists Valentin Tikhomirov. It is called “Pushkin's Tales”, and shows some episodes from various Pushkin's literary creations. The box has four scenes around the body, and one scene painted on the lid.
The lid features a scene from “The Tale of Tsar Saltan”. Tsar Saltan is approaching the wondrous island on board of his ship. He wants to make sure that all stories connected with this magic island are true. The tsar is met by Prince Gvidon who stands ashore together with his wife and mother.
The front side of the box shows a scene from “The Tale of Golden Cockerel”. Here we can see Tsar Dadon who returns to his kingdom with the Shemakha Queen intending to marry her. He is stopped by the astrologer who asks to fulfill the promised wish. The astrologer wants to marry the Shemakha Queen instead of Tsar Dadon.
On the left side Tikhomirov has painted an episode from “Ruslan and Luydmila”. Here we can see Ruslan who returns to his native kingdom together with his beloved Luydmila saved from the wicked wizard Chernomor.
On the right side we can see a fragment from the tale of the Sleeping Princess. It shows Prince Yelisey who rides his steed together with the Sleeping Princess whom he saved from the eternal sleep.
The rear side of the box features again a scene from “The Tale of Tsar Saltan”. Here Tikhomirov has painted the feast arranged in the palace of Prince Gvidon to celebrate the reunion of his family. The following phrase is written above this scene: ‘I have visited the wedding, I have visited the feast. Wine has been trickling down my moustaches, but I haven't tasted it'. Beneath the scene Tikhomirov has written Mstera, the title, and his name.
The box's exterior is decorated with the beautiful Byzantine style ornamentation painted in mustard and blue tempera paints, and outlined with gold. The edges of the lid and the lower part of the box's body are also adorned with gold floral patterns.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while a radiant red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on legs.
