This magnificent work has been painted by Alexander Gaun from the village of Mstera. Most of all this artist likes to depict biblical subjects, and has already created a series of works based on this theme such as “Flood”, “Exodus”, “Babylon Tower”, “Golgotha”, “Judas Treachery”, etc. This is another box from this series based on the biblical subject of the birth of Jesus Christ. It shows various episodes from the Book of Luke that help to remember in details this interesting theme.
To paint this work Gaun has used his usual palette based on combination of red, brown and orange tones. Gold paint is used to paint the armor of the soldiers and the halos of the saints.
The scene is framed with two parallel gold lines; and the box's sides are adorned with intricate gold floral patterns.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title (“The Birth of Christ”), and the village of Mstera at the bottom of the scene.
