This impressive work has been painted by Alexander Gaun from the village of Mstera. Alexander is interested in depicting biblical themes, and has already created many works based on this subject including “Flood”, “Exodus”, “Babylon Tower”, “Golgotha”, “Judas Treachery”, etc. This box is also painted on the religious theme. It shows various episodes from the Book of Luke that describe the wonder of Jesus Christ's birth.
To paint this work Gaun has used his usual palette based on combination of red, brown and orange tones. Gold paint is used to paint the armor of the soldiers, the halos of the saints, and also to detail the costumes of some characters.
The scene is framed with two parallel gold lines; and the box's sides are adorned with a nice gold floral pattern.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title (“The Birth of Christ”), and the village of Mstera at the bottom of the scene.
