This colorful box was painted by Daniil Molodkin. The work is called “Atlas and the Musician”. It continues the artist's series of works showing fantastic creatures - little people, living in a downsized grass world. Besides the little grass people that can be found almost in each Molodkin's work, this box shows the Atlas who holds the skies and the Musician who plays his pipe, and has a town built on his hat.
To paint this work the artist has used his favorite palette filled with greens, blues and reds. Gold as always, is used to enhance the details in the box and to fully bring the colors to life.
The scene is outlined with gold. The edges of the lid and the box's sides are decorated with Molodkin's style gold leafy ornaments. On the sides these ornaments are enhanced with silver paint.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Mstera, the year of 2007 and the title.
