Description: Vladimir Molodkin of Mstera is the artist who painted this gorgeous box. He is not only a great Master artist, he is also the father and mentor of his sons, Daniil, Nikolay and Denis, who are also well-known Mstera artists. The legacy of the Molodkin family will remain on Mstera soil, and in the minds and hearts of the lacquer art world for many generations.
The work is called “Games of the Slaves”, and shows how the Russians celebrated their pagan feasts in ancient times. After performing different magic and religious rites, they arranged a public merrymaking. They sang and danced in a ring around their pagan deities, arranged boat competitions, fist fights, fights with wild animals and many other merry games.
The composition is complex. It is filled with a plenty of various characters and each of them has an individual appearance. The architecture and the surrounding landscape are nicely painted with a keen eye for detail. The brushwork is exquisite, which is enhanced by the bright gold detailing.
The edges of the lid and the box's sides are decorated with intricate gold leafy patterns.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition for ease of opening. The box rests on four feet. The work is signed with the artist's name, Mstera and the title.
