Description: This gorgeous work has been created by the well-known Mstera artist Mikhail Strunin. It continues his series of works dedicated to the architecture of ancient Moscow. Working on it, Strunin has used old paintings drawn in the XVIII and XIX centuries.
The artist has done tremendous work to paint this box as it has four extensive paintings around the body, one rectangular composition on the lid, and a panorama that runs around the curved sides of the lid.
The lid shows ladies and gentlemen strolling within the territory of the Moscow Kremlin. The panorama that runs around the lid's sides shows the Red Square, the Tsar Bell and the people riding in troikas and sledges along the streets of old Moscow. The box's front side features the view of the Red Square and the St.-Basil's Cathedral while the rear side shows the Moscow Kremlin. On box's right side the artist has painted the Bolshoi Theatre while on the left side he has drawn the square within the territory of the Moscow Kremlin.
The work is painted in blue and brown tones of tempera paints. Every element of the architecture in the scenes exudes precision. The box's exterior is decorated with elaborate gold leafy patterns.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the name of the artist, the village of Mstera, the year of 2007 and the title (“Moscow. Yesterday and Today") on the box's exterior bottom in gold paints.
