Description:

This large five-sided box by popular Mstera artist Daniil Molodkin shows several recognizable scenes from Lewis Carroll's classic tale “Alice in Wonderland”. Here he has painted the tea party in the Hatter's house (the box's lid), Alice who has successfully crossed the pool of tears (the box's front side), Alice's meeting with the Griphon (the box's left side), Alice speaking to the Caterpillar (the box's right side), and Alice playing croquet with the Queen (the box's rear side).
The palette is full of vivid colors that are used to boldly render the setting and the characters within. Each figure is dressed in their own unique costume, giving each their own personality. This creates an animated dynamic within the composition that enlivens the theme that this scene is based on. The background is executed with the utmost attention to flow and rhythm in balancing the colors and making the grass seem lush and uncultured. The gold not only pulls the eye closer to the composition, it helps bring out the true aesthetic nature of the combinations of color found in the scene.
Each scene is outlined with a line of gold paint. Precise and tightly wound gold foliage pattern decorates the edges of the lid. Similar gold foliage pattern wraps around the base the box.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Mstera, the title and the year of 2008 on the lid's interior.
