Description: This originally shaped box has been painted by the youngest of Molodkin's brothers, Nikolay Molodkin. Intentionally or accidentally Molodkin has mixed in this work the plots of two Russian fairy-tales - "The Humpbacked Little Pony" and "Ivan Tsarevich and the Firebird". In the center of the composition we can see Ivan stealing the Princess. From the right of the central scene we can see Ivan stealing the Firebird, and from the left of it the artist has painted the Humpbacked Little Pony. In the upper part of the composition the Tsar notices Ivan's magnificent steeds and offers him to be a royal stableman.
The composition is painted in light blue, brown and green tones. The brushwork is exquisite, which is enhanced by the hairline gold detailing the artist adds. This piece shows that geometrical, artistic, and technical exploitation, when in perfect harmony can yield tremendous results.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on legs. On the lid's interior Molodkin has painted a beautiful ornament using blue and light brown tempera paints. Inside this ornament he has written his name, the title ("The Humpbacked Little Pony" ), the year of 2008 and the village of Mstera.
