Description: This work is painted by one of the talented Molodkin brothers, N. Molodkin. He is the youngest in the Molodkin's family. The father of brothers, V. Molodkin, has raised his boys to be great artists.
The box shows a moment from the beginning of Pushkin's “Tale of Tsar Saltan”. Here we can see Tsar Saltan who is going to overhear the conversation of three sisters.
The composition is painted in Nikolay Molodkin's favorite palette filled with soft blues, browns and yellows. Golden contours outline fir trees and bushes painted in the foreground as well as the designs on the character's clothes and harnesses of the horses. Gold metal leaf inlay creates a light source in the window of the house where three sisters sit inside, decorates the characters' costumes and the horses' harness, and also produces a sparkle of the sky.
The scene is outlined with gold. Intricate gold foliage ornamentation decorate the edges of the lid, and another gold foliage ornamentation, only bigger in size, wraps around the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the work while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition. The box rests upon four legs. The work is signed, titled and dated (2008) inside a beautiful design painted in tempera paints on the lid's interior.
