Description: Rich, warm tones and a bold, graphic style call to mind medieval tapestries in this work by Victor Kuznetsov. His works are in private collections around the world. It is very easy to recognize his boxes because Vladimir Kuznetsov has his own painting style. He has innovated the traditional style of Mstera lacquer miniature and created his own fantastic world inhabited by powerful kings, pure virgins, brave knights, and mythic animals.
The work is called “Keepers of Pearls”, and shows the artist's fantasy on this theme. A group of noble people who look like Greek gods are ‘Keepers of Pearls. They ride mighty, winged steeds that trample down the blue sea. The dolphins bring the Keepers the pearls found on the sea-bottom.
The scene is beautifully painted, with well placed accents of gold adding shimmer. Here the artist has used his favorite yellow-orange palette with additions of reds, blues and browns.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with elegant gold patterns. The lid is hinged from the left of the composition, and the box rests on four rounded legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title, the year of 2009 and the village of Mstera.
