Daniil Molodkin from Mstera painted this exceptional box. Daniil is one of the most popular Russian lacquer artists from Mstera. In his unique boxes he shows us a side of the fantastic world that is below our feet. In the grasses there are innumerable insects, tiny animals and dwarfs who have various professions. In this work the artist depicts the dwarf- postman who carries mail riding the snail. Another dwarf is waiting for him sitting on the stub in front of his interestingly designed house. Through the open door you can see a fragment of his house's interior.
The scene is painted in green tones as the action takes place in summer. Gold as always, is used to enhance the details and to fully bring the colors to life. Besides the main characters the composition is filled with dozens of various plants and insects.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The scene is outlined with gold. A gold foliage pattern frames the composition, and this same pattern decorates the sides of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs.
