Description: This elegantly designed box is a creation of Alexander Dogadin from the village of Mstera. On the box's lid the artist has painted several scenes from “The Mistress of the Copper Mountain”, one of the “Tales of the Malachite Casket”, a series of inter-linking stories written by Pavel Bazhov. The story tells about a young craftsman, Danilo, who seeks to perfect his art. His desire to create a marvelous stone flower was the reason of his misfortunes. He was kidnapped by the Mistress of Copper Mountain and became her slave. Fortunately, in the end of the story Danilo was saved by his faithful, young wife, Katya.
The composition is painted in the traditional Mstera style in bright tempera paints. Various details are enhanced with brilliant gold paint. The composition is set into the protuberant oval and richly decorated with intricate gold ornaments accented with silver and with green and blue tempera paints. The box's sides are adorned with luxuriant gold designs accented with brown tempera paints.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition. The box rests on four carved legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title and the village of Mstera.
