Description: Evgeniy Tselikov, world-renowned Palekh artist, painted this unusual composition. He does not consider himself a traditionalist because he does not paint compositions that have made Palekh famous. He holds that those exploiting the works of former masters don't have any creative integrity. This might be an elitist point of view, but his work speaks for itself. The composition shows a dragon, which looks rather realistic. It has claws, sharp fangs and expressive eyes. Its body is covered with the veined and patterned skin, which resembles the skin of a lizard.
The dragon is painted with a special brush that has a single hair at its tip, and shows the artist's talent of a real miniaturist. The background, and the sides of the box are painted with a mixture of green, gold and brownish-reddish paint, while the blackness of the box is very apparent. It is amazing how the artist manipulates paint with a brush, which makes him one of the most outstanding artists in lacquer art today.
The box is made out of paper-mache. The edges of the lid, and the sides of the box are decorated with elegant gold beading. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box; clear lacquer is added in layers that are polished to a gleaming finish. The box has no hinge and rests on four rounded feet. It is signed with the artist's name, village and year (2003).
