This box was painted by Khromykh M. from the village of Palekh. The composition shows a lad embracing a pretty young girl. Being confused a little, the girl laughs merrily and pushes her suitor aside. But her ardent eyes and a pleased smile show that she is absolutely happy. It's a frosty winter day and everything around is wrapped in snow. Branches of mountain ash bestrewn with clusters of bright red berries look very beautifully against a background of white snow.
The palette is very bright and mellow. Each character is drawn in an animated style that complements the structure of the composition. Gold and aluminum paints are used to detail the scene with great skill, and the application of these metallic paints creates depth, flashes of light, and brings the action to life.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The composition is framed with rich and beautiful gold and aluminum floral patterns. The sides of the box are decorated with the similar floral patterns that can be found on the lid but they are a little bigger in size. The box isn't hinged and rests on three round legs. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box is signed with the artist's name, village and year (2004).
