Description: This marvelous box was painted by Chigaryova A. from the village of Palekh. It depicts Thumbelina who is the heroine of the Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale. She was a tiny girl who was born from a flower. During the story she had many adventures, and met many animals, some of them were her friends and some of them were not so nice. For a long time she was lonely, but once her friend, the swallow, took her away to a warm country where she met a fairy prince. The prince made a proposal of marriage to her and they lived happily ever after.
Thumbelina is painted in bright blue, rose and green tones, many multicolored flowers surround her. Sparkling spangles decorate Thumbelina's wings and the flower on which she is sitting. On this composition she looks like a princess of elves.
The oval composition is framed is with a gold beading. The rest space of the lid is covered with a gold metal leaf on which the artist depicts beautiful multicolored flowers: lilies, orchids, narcissus, roses and others. The edges of the lid are again decorated with gold beading. The ornamentation of the box's sides repeats the technique applied for the lid: a gold metal leaf on which the artist depicts beautiful flowers wraps around the box's sides. This band of flowers is framed with gold beading.
It should be also pointed out that the artist here applies unusual for the Palekh school style of painting and technique of decoration, and that is why this box is unique and deserves attention of lacquer art enthusiasts.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box isn't hinged and rests on four rounded feet. It is signed only with the artist's name.
