This stunning piece of authentic Russian artistry was created by talented Palekh artist A. Lapshin. Here, we see a gathering of characters from Lewis Carroll's classic "Alice in Wonderland". The Rabbit, Alice, and the Cheshire Cat sit at the table and drink tea. The Rabbit tells Alice that the Time has taken offence and stopped; and now it will be always 5 o'clock. It is the time of afternoon snack in England, when English men usually drink tea.
To paint this box the artist uses only gold paints and the black background typical for all Palekh boxes.
The composition is framed with the original ornamentation that consists of tiny gold and aluminum beads. The edges of the lid are decorated with gold and aluminum beads of bigger size. The sides of the box also decorated with gold and aluminum beading.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the piece. The box is hinged from the top and rests on a flat bottom. It is signed with the artist's name, the village of Palekh, the title and the year of 2005.
