Description: This attractive box was painted by Bakalov from the village of Palekh. It shows the scene from the Russian cartoon film "The Musicians from the town of Bremen", based on the German fairy-tale of the same name. This tale tells about thrilling adventures of the vagrant musicians: the lad, the cat, the dog, the cock and the donkey. Once they arrange a concert for the King and the Queen, and during this concert the lad falls in love with the beautiful Princess, the King's daughter. Later the lad's friends help him to marry the Princess.
The scene is painted in bright red, blue, green tones over the gold metal leaf. The costumes of the characters are detailed with aluminum and gold paints. The artist demonstrates his talent painting the characters and the trees around them. The characters are very expressive, while the trees' foliage and branches are thoroughly detailed.
The band of gold metal leaf decorated with floral pattern painted in black paints wraps around the box's sides.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge, and rests on a flat bottom. It is signed with the name of the artist, the village of Palekh, and the title ("The Musicians from the town of Bremen").
