Valery Bokaryov from the village of Palekh created this beautiful box. It shows a scene from the Russian folk fairy-tale "The Flying Ship". The main hero of this tale is Ivan the Fool who manages to build the Flying Ship and marry the tsar's daughter. Here we can see Ivan flying on board his magic ship.
The scene is painted in blue, red and brown tones against the black background. Gold paints are used to detail the Flying Ship and Ivan's costume, while aluminum paint outlines the whirling clouds.
The box is originally designed. Its lid is made out of paper-mache, whereas its base is made out of German silver. The box's interior bottom as well as its exterior bottom are covered with dark crimson velvet. The lid's interior is decorated with beautiful gold patterns. The lid is hinged and it can be locked by means of a small loop. The box rests on three small metal legs. The work is signed by the artist.
