This traditional Palekh box is a creation of Marina Khromykh. It features peasants having fun near the frozen river. One of the girls is laughing so much on jokes of two lads painted near her that she has dropped her buckets filled with water. The man painted in the foreground has fallen on the ground with laughter. All other peasants are also laughing heartily.
As customary with Palekh tradition, the artist uses the black lacquer exterior as the background for the composition. This intensifies the colors and especially the golden contours.
The scene is framed with intricate gold and aluminum floral pattern. The same pattern can be found wrapping around the box's sides that runs parallel to the pattern composed of gold beads.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Red lacquer covers the interior of the box and black lacquer is used to paint the exterior. The box has a hinge from the top of the composition and rests on four legs. The box is signed with the artist's name, and the village of Palekh.
