Description: This alluring box is a creation by Dmitriy Ogir from the village of Palekh. Here he has chosen to depict a scene from Hans Christian Andersen's popular fairy tale "The Snow Queen". This tale tells about adventures of a little, but very brave girl Gerda who sets out in search of her brother, Kay, kidnapped by the Snow Queen.
The scene shows the children sitting in their grandmother's drawing room. Suddenly, a strong blast of wind opens the window, and Kay notices outside the face of Snow Queen peeping into their cozy room.
Ogir draws the scene with his characteristic skill. The two characters are attractively drawn, with smooth, appealing faces and detailed costumes. The palette includes various shades of green, blue and brown. Gold paint adds various details throughout the scene.
To decorate the box's exterior (except its bottom covered with black lacquer), the artist uses the original technique: at first he covers the black lacquered surface of the box with gold paint, and then spreads gold spangles over the gold background. The interior is traditionally red.
Along the lid's edges Ogir paints roses, branches of a tree, and icicles. On the box's sides he draws the black cat lying on the branches of a tree and several Danish-style stone houses.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The lid isn't hinged and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the village of Palekh, the title, and the year of 2004.
