Description: Peskova Irina from the village of Palekh created this attractive box. It features a scene from the children's classic tale of "Snow White and Seven Dwarfs". Many lacquer miniaturists frequently depict the Russian version of this story entitled "The Dead Princess and Seven Bogatyrs."
Here we can see the Snow White sleeping deeply, and all seven dwarfs trying to awaken her. But they can't do it because she sleeps under the influence of Queen's evil spell. Only the Prince who loves the Snow White can awaken her with his sweet kiss.
The composition is a bouquet of brilliance. The extensive use of bright gold and aluminum contours makes this so. Gold metal leaf adds more luster, it is inlaid in the portion of the window to create the depth of fairy-tale landscape painted outdoors. The way in which the artist has assembled the characters is particularly striking. They really seem to wait for the Princess's awakening. Their clothes and facial expressions are the highlights of the work.
The scene is framed with a simple gold wavy pattern. The same pattern can be found wrapping around the box's bottom border. The sides of the box are decorated with complex gold and aluminum floral patterns.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes its interior. The lid is hinged at the top, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed and dated (2006) by the artist in gold paints at the bottom of the composition.
