This splendid Palekh box is a creation of the artistic duet of Natalie Brovkina and N. Philippova. Its subject is based on the popular fairy-tale "Puss in Boots". This is an old French tale written by Charles Perrault that tells about a cunning and clever cat.
In "Puss In Boots", a poor miller dies and leaves his youngest son nothing but a cat. The son is none too happy about it. But what a legacy the bequeathed cat turns out to be! The cat in tall boots creates a new identity for the youngest son--the Marquis of Carabas, complete with fine clothes, fields of wheat, a castle stolen from an ogre, and in the end, the respect of the king and the hand of the king's daughter.
The box shows the moment when the cat starts to realize his plan of making his master happy. He carries the hare to the king, saying that this is a present from his master Marquis of Carabas.
The composition is painted in bright red, brown, orange, green and blue tempera paints. Gold and aluminum paints are used to accentuate various details through out the composition, and to create an intricate floral pattern that adorns the lid's edges.
The box is constructed out of papier-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge affixed from the left of the composition, and rests on a flat bottom. Signed with the artists' names, the village of Palekh and the year of 2006.
