Description: This round box is a creation of Babkin from the village of Palekh. It features a fragment from the popular story of, "The Sleeping Princess." In the center of the scene we can see the evil Queen who asks her magic mirror who is now the most beautiful woman in the kingdom. The mirror answers that her stepdaughter is the most beautiful woman in the kingdom.
The scene is painted in green, orange and red tempera paints. There are nice details throughout, from the fine gold in the queen's costume and the silver lines in the arched window, to a variety of minor details that help to reproduce vividly the interior of the queen's chamber.
Gold beads of various size decorate the edges of the lid while the box's sides are decorated with an elegant gold leafy pattern.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh and the year of 1997. Although the work was created ten years ago, it looks as if it is absolutely new!
