Description: This box has been painted by Natalya Denisova-Babanova from the village of Palekh. Natalya was born in 1975 in the town of Kokhma of the Ivanovo Region. During 1990-1995 she studied in the Palekh Art School. Her teachers were V. Golov and V. Morokin. Themes of her works are folklore, literature and hunting scenes. She has participated in various exhibitions since 1999.
The box shows a scene from the fairy tale “Bremen Town Musicians” written by the Brothers Grimm. Four animals, a donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster have grown too old to be useful to their masters. Because their masters want to get rid of them, they run away. They meet on the road and decide to go to Bremen-Town to be street musicians. Soon, they discover a cozy cabin occupied by robbers. The four friends have an idea and manage to scare the robbers away by making the loudest music they can. So, they can settle into a new home and take over the robbers' treasure.
The scene is painted in bright tempera paints against the black background. Gold and aluminum paints are used to detail each element drawn here.
A nice gold pattern decorates the edges of the lid. On the box's exterior bottom the artist has written her name, Palekh, the title and the year of 1997 of which the piece was finished within the gold decorative frame typical for all works painted by Denisova-Baranova.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Red lacquer covers the interior of the box and black lacquer is used to paint the exterior. The box has a hinge from the left of the scene and rests on a flat bottom.
