Title: Greek goddess Pallas Athene
Artist: Denisova-Babanova Natalie
Size: 10.5x7.5x2
Size (inches): 4x3x0.75
Price : $495 SOLD!

This box is a splendid creation of Natalya Denisova-Babanova from the village of Palekh. Natalya was born in 1975 in the town of Kokhma of the Ivanovo Region. In 1995 she finished the Palekh Art School where she studied under guidance of V. Golov and V. Morokin. She likes to paint her works on the themes of folklore and literature.
Here the artist has painted the Greek goddess Pallas Athene, the patron of wisdom, military victory, and women's crafts. She is also known as Tritogeneia and Minerva (Roman). Her attributes in iconography include the shield, the helmet, and the spear.
To paint this work the artist has used orange, red, and green tempera paints. Gold paint applied with a very thin brush adds intricate details that bring out the true beauty of the palette and develops the contours as well.
A nice gold pattern decorates the edges of the lid. On the box's exterior bottom the artist has written her name, Palekh, the title and the year of 1997 of which the piece was finished within the gold decorative frame typical for all works painted by Denisova-Baranova.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Red lacquer covers the interior of the box and black lacquer is used to paint the exterior. The box has a hinge from the left of the scene and rests on a flat bottom.
