This beautiful box shows the Winter Morning painted in Palekh style by Matyushkina. Looking at this box you can imagine how the village of Palekh looks like in Winter time from not far away distance, for example from the nearest forest. In the far background the church of the Exaltation of the Cross built in 1762-1774 is depicted.
The drawing is quite fine, with small details in the architecture and the landscape. The palette for this piece contains a wide spectrum of bright and vivid colors. The scene richly detailed with gold and aluminum paints.
The scene is framed with a simple gold pattern. More complex and rich ornamentation can be found on the box's sides; it is painted in gold and aluminum in the form of various flowers, leaves, and scrolls.
The piece is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint its exterior while red lacquer completes its interior. The lid is not hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title (“Winter Morning”), the village of Palekh and the year of 2006.
