Description: This well executed piece of Russian artistry was composed by the talented Nina Matyushkina. Her composition is a prescription based in elegance and luxury. The box features an episode from the Pushkin's “Tale of Sleeping Princess and Seven Bogatyrs”. Here we can see the Sleeping Princess's stepmother, the Queen, who asks her magic mirror who the most beautiful woman in the kingdom is.
The palette used by the artist is filled with reds and light blues. Gold and aluminum paint is used to attract light to the scene.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with a very complex design painted in gold and aluminum. This decoration exhibits the skilled and steady hand of the artist, who enriches the box's aesthetics with the decoration's intricacy and detail. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, the title (“Mirror”), and the year of 2003.
