Ivan Beketov has painted this scene with a winter troika (three horse sleigh) speeding through the Russian countryside. A loving couple sit in the sleigh and enjoy a picturesque winter landscape while a driver encourages the horses.
Warm and cold tones are successfully combined here. These colors play with the wintertime setting that is supposed to be cold but the troika lets the people's souls feel warm, that is why it is painted with warm paints. The details are enhanced with gold and silver paint.
The scene is framed with gold beads; gold beads can be also found wrapping around the bottom edge of the box's body. On the box's sides the artist has drawn silver snowflakes accompanied with intricate gold filigree.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the work. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh and the year of 2005.
