This attractive oval box has been created by the talented Palekh artist, Yegenia Shatokhina. Here she has managed to express beauty and charm of a small Russian provincial town. The colors that the artist uses convey the warm weather. Here she incorporates a tremendous amount of detail to the people, landscape, and the architecture. To aid in the detailing procedure Shatokhina uses gold and aluminum paints in almost every aspect of the compositions. Not only does the use of metallic paint add detail; it also attracts light to the piece and makes the entire box sparkle.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box and red lacquer is used to paint the interior. Shatokhina has decorated the edges of the box's lid with gold beading while the box's sides are adorned intricate gold and aluminum ornamentation. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, and the year of 2004.
