This well executed piece of Russian artistry was composed by the talented Nina Matyushkina. It shows the elk pasturing in the winter forest. Light blue, green, brown and pink tones of tempera paints dominate here. Tiny gold and aluminum lines outline and bring animation to the scene.
The scene is framed with an intricate floral pattern drawn in gold and aluminum. The same pattern but a little bigger in size can be found wrapping around the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the year of 2004, the title (“Winter”), and the village of Palekh.
