This beautiful Palekh box has been skillfully painted by Yevgenia Shatokhina (or "Zhenya" for short, as she signs the piece). Here she has chosen to depict a scene from Christian Andersen's popular fairy-tale "Thumbelina". In this tale a woman receives a magic seed from a crone. Once planted, a tiny girl emerges from its flower. The woman names the child Thumbelina.
The scene is nicely painted using egg-tempera paints, and beautifully detailed with gold and aluminum paint. Gold is also used to decorate the box's exterior with intricate patterns.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, and the year of 2004.
